Technology
At St. James the Greater, we’re committed to the next generation of Catholic education, even for our smallest learners.
Continuing a commitment to the latest teaching methods and technology, St. James the Greater has SMART Boards in each classroom and an iPad center for students.
In our preschool classrooms, the smart board is a valuable tool that brings learning to life through interactive stories, songs, games, and group activities. It helps children stay engaged, supports different learning styles, and encourages participation, collaboration, and basic tech skills—all in a fun and age-appropriate way.
The iPad center, when used intentionally and in moderation, can be a valuable tool in a preschool classroom- especially as a timed center with clear guidelines. Here are several reasons why an iPad center can be beneficial:
1. Supports Early Learning Skills
-
Literacy & Math: Interactive apps can reinforce letter recognition, phonics, counting, patterns, and problem-solving.
-
Fine Motor Development: Swiping, tapping, and dragging help strengthen hand-eye coordination and finger control.
2. Builds Digital Literacy
-
Children begin to understand how to interact with technology responsibly, an important skill in today’s world.
3. Encourages Independent Learning
-
High-quality apps often guide children through activities at their own pace, promoting self-direction and focus during a timed center rotation.
4. Reinforces Classroom Themes
-
iPads can extend learning by connecting digital activities to classroom themes (e.g., seasons, animals, emotions) or current lessons.
5. Promotes Engagement for Different Learning Styles
-
Visual and auditory learners especially benefit from the multimedia features of educational apps.
-
It can be a helpful tool for children who need repetition or extra practice in a less pressured environment.
6. Equitable Learning Opportunity
-
Some children may not have access to technology at home. An iPad center introduces them to age-appropriate digital experiences in a controlled, teacher-supervised setting.
???? Why Timed Use Matters
-
Prevents overuse and ensures balanced exposure to technology alongside hands-on, sensory-rich, and social learning.
-
Reinforces turn-taking and structure in a center-based classroom model.
