Pulitzer Prize-Winning Cartoonist
Creator of the Mother Goose and Grimm Comic Strip
Mike Peters is recognized as one of our nation's most prominent cartoon artists for his outstanding work as both a political and comic strip cartoonist. Mike has been interested in cartooning, and particularly political cartooning, since childhood.
Born on October 9, 1943, Mike spent his formative years at St. James. Although he moved out of the neighborhood before his graduation from 8th grade, he went on to graduate from Christian Brothers College High School in 1961. After graduating from Washington University and serving in Viet Nam, Mike found a cartooning position on the Dayton Daily News in 1969. That was the beginning... In 1972, his editorial cartoons became syndicated nationally. In 1981 Mike was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Journalism and in 1984 the award-winning Mother Goose & Grimm comic strip was born -- all with the help of Marian, his wife, best friend and business partner of 35 years.
Recently, Mike had this to say about his years at St. James:
I come back to St. James every time I get to St. Louis (sometimes three times a year). I sit in the church, I walk up and down the streets, and hang out at my old house at 1525 Gregg (to the point that the different owners of my old house tell each new one..."a cartoonist will show up at the door, don't be afraid just let him sit on the front porch!") The memories of walking to church through the snow on Christmas Eve night for 12 o'clock mass will stay with me always. It hit me years ago that because I do the comic strip Mother Goose and Grimm, those first ten years of my life in Dogtown were probably more important to me than most other kids... because Grimm in the strip is ME during those years - those wonderful, magical years! I always come back to St. James to recapture that kid - to help keep Grimm alive in me. The streets, the church, and the stage in the school yard - that was my universe. I knew every sidewalk stone, every front porch, every alley, and every cherry tree. I make use of those memories in my comic strip every day. So thank you Dogtown, thank you Gregg Avenue, and thank you St. James! I owe my comic strip success to you. Best - Mike Peters
