Do you have to be Catholic to attend St. James the Greater School?
No. Children from many different faith backgrounds attend our school. All students at St. James School, however, are expected to both attend and participate in our religion classes and weekly all-school Mass.


How much does it cost to attend St. James the Greater School?
St. James is a tuition-based school. Our tuition rate is the same for parishioners and non-parishioners. For the 2018-19 school year, the tuition for one student is $5120; a little over $29 per day. In addition, we offer significant discounts for the second and third child. Do you offer families financial aid?
Yes we do. Any family wishing to apply for tuition assistance for the next school year must apply through the Today and Tomorrow Education Foundation. Please click HERE


Are the teachers at St. James degreed and accredited?
Yes they are. Please visit the individual teacher information pages listed under "Who We Are."


Does St. James have a Learning Consultant on staff?
Yes, a certified learning consultant is a member of our faculty. Support ranges from assistance with test preparation, organizational strategies, note-taking, reading and math strategies as well as classroom observations.


What grade levels are included at St. James?
St. James the Greater school encompasses the pre-K through 8th grade levels.


Where do your students go when they graduate from St. James?
Most of our eighth grade students continue their education in a Catholic high school setting. Our graduating students will attend a variety of Catholic High Schools next year. We are proud to note that all of our graduating students were accepted to their 'first choice' school.


Do you have a Pre-Kindergarten program?
Yes we do. Our pre-kindergarten program is known as "Carlson's Kids". Children may begin attending pre-K anytime after their third birthday when they have been potty-trained. Please click HERE for more information about "Carlson's Kids".


Is your Kindergarten full-day or half-day?
Our Kindergarten class is a full-day, Monday-Friday program. Children must turn 5 before August 1st of the current school year to be eligible to attend kindergarten. Please choose the Kindergarten option under the "Academics" tab for more information.


Do St. James students wear a uniform?
Yes. All PreK-8 students wear a green polo shirt with the St. James logo. For more uniform information, please check the school uniform tab under "Admissions."


Do you offer athletic programs?
Yes, St. James offers a wide variety of athletic opportunities to its students under the auspices of the St. James the Greater Athletic Association. Students may choose to participate in a variety of sports, including: basketball, soccer, volleyball, T-ball and baseball. Because we have such a large & modern gymnasium, St. James plays host to many basketball tournaments throughout the season. Please click on the "Athletic Association" tab for more information.


What is your technology program like?
Every classroom is equipped with a SmartBoard. In addition, St. James the Greater School provides each K-3 student with an iPad and individual chromebooks for 4th-8th graders.  There is also a computer lab for large group projects and all of our faculty access Google Apps for Education as part of their instructional program.  Parents and students may access academic performance on a regular basis through EduConnect and School Messenger is our school's electronic communication system.  


Are there opportunities for learning outside of the school building?
Yes. All students at St. James participate in 1 'Cultural Day' during the year. Students leave the school building to engage in special days of learning that are synchronous to their classroom studies. In addition to the 'Cultural Day', individual classes may take field trips as designated by the homeroom teachers.


What are the opportunities for parental involvement at St. James?
Parents are strongly encouraged to get involved in the many activities at St. James the Greater School. In addition to working at our major fund-raising events, parents have opportunities to be involved in a number of ways. Parent volunteers are needed to work at Lunch/Playground duty on a daily basis. Moreover, 1-2 "Room Parents" are needed for each grade level to plan parties and special events throughout the year. Finally, parents will be asked to fill positions within the Home & School Association and the School Board as these positions become available.


What are the hours of the school day?
Students may be dropped off beginning at 7:30am in the playground area behind school.  Students enter the building at 7:50am (first bel).  Anyone arriving after 8:00am, is considered to be tardy.  Regular dismissal time is at 3:00pm.  On most early dismissal days (11:30am or 12:00 noon) After School Care is available except where indicated.  


Do you offer "Before School" care?
We do not offer before school care at this time.


Do you offer "After School" care?
Yes we do. Our after school care program is available for a modest fee. Our after school care is available from 3PM until 6PM for all grades (PK-8). 


Do you have a hot lunch program?
Yes! Although you may bring your lunch from home, St. James offers its students an affordable in-house hot lunch program. Regular lunch price is $2.25 (free and reduced-price lunches are available for those who qualify). You may purchase a yearly lunch ticket, a monthly lunch ticket or a weekly lunch ticket. Are students allowed to have cell phones in school?
Students with cell phones must drop their phone off in the secretary's office at the beginning of the school day, and they must retrieve it from the secretary at the end of the school day. No student is allowed to possess a cell phone in class! For more information, please click on the "Handbook" tab.


Where is St. James the Greater located?
Our school is centrally located between I-64/40 and I-44 in the heart of Dogtown. We are several blocks east of Hampton Avenue and north of Manchester Avenue at 1360 Tamm Avenue. We are close to Forest Park, the St. Louis Zoo and Turtle Park! Click HERE to see a map of our location.
